Cricket News MS Dhoni criticism and non-criticism – Is it justified?

first_img For all the Latest Sports News News, Cricket News News, Download News Nation Android and iOS Mobile Apps. New Delhi: MS Dhoni’s batting has dominated all the talk in the ODI series against Australia.  The common factor involving all the results was the debate surrounding his strike-rate and finishing prowess. In Sydney, he was panned for his super-slow approach for India’s 34-run loss while in Adelaide, the aura of Dhoni seemed to be back as he guided Virat Kohli’s side over the line in a tense match. The effort in Adelaide tore social media apart. Many Dhoni fans stated that the finisher is back. There were many doubters that still persisted. There were many former cricketers who sang Dhoni’s praise. Sunil Gavaskar said, “Leave the gentleman alone. The value you cannot calculate at all.” Before the Adelaide knock, Rohit Sharma stressed on the value that Dhoni provides. The major question is: Is the criticism and adulation of Dhoni in extreme measures justified? Let us look at the critics. Many people cite the example of 2018 in which Dhoni had a poor year, both in terms of high scores and in terms of strike-rate. One website went to the length of dissecting his strike-rate minus the fours and sixes and presented his statistics in a much poorer vain. One other major website stated that his average against the spinners had dropped alarmingly and pointed out that this had hurt the team on numerous occasions. His inability to guide India over the line in the series against England has been the major sticking point. However, after his knock of 87* in Melbourne to help India win a bilateral series for the first time ever in Australia and with his exploits in Adelaide, the doubters probably have no place to hide and are on shaky ground. Read More | Virat Kohli aces the chase, MS Dhoni silences doubters with Adelaide win vs AustraliaWhen it comes to support, people have pointed out his average in successful run-chases. Following the Adelaide win, one graphic stated that Dhoni’s average is close to 100 in successful run-chases, which is more than Virat Kohli. His brilliance in Melbourne has probably taken it well past 100.Numbers not in perspectiveWhen it comes to numbers game in cricket, it is often a question of picking and choosing a sample size. In the case of Dhoni, it is important for foreground and background when it comes to analysing his contributions. When one looks at the whole picture regarding MS Dhoni, 2018 is just a mere aberration when it comes to strike-rate and average. In all the corresponding years since 2018, starting from 2005, his strike-rate has gone down below 80 only since. His average also has dipped below 40 only once since 2018 and that was in 2016 when he averaged 27.Read More | You cannot calculate Dhoni’s value, says Sunil GavaskarHowever, the crucial factors in 2016 and 2018 have been the number of balls faced. Out of all the years, in these two years, he has batted at No.4, No.5, No.6 and No.7. Coming in those positions, he has faced the least amount of deliveries in his entire playing career. In 2016, he faced 347 deliveries while in 2018, he faced just 385 deliveries. In all the other years, he has never faced less than 450 deliveries. During his peak years, which were from 2007 to 2009, he faced over 1000 deliveries. With Dhoni, the prominent trend which has been his blueprint is that he has a slow accumulator who has accelerated at the end. In 2016 and 2018, perhaps Dhoni has not had the time to settle in and go for the kill. This has led to misjudgment when it came to the right time to accelerate.Read More | MS Dhoni’s short-run missed by umpires during Adelaide ODI, watch hereThere have been instances when he has not gotten the team over the line. There are prominent instances of Dhoni not guiding the team over the finishing line. In Birmingham in 2014, in Lauderhill in 2016 and in the games against Zimbabwe, Dhoni could not finish the job off. However, that was in Twenty20 Internationals. The Sydney ODI appears to be a mere aberration to the norm but the situation was that he had come when the team was reeling at 4/3 in four overs.Does India have a problem with MS Dhoni and his ‘slow’ batting? The verdict is actually split. The numbers are subjective. However, Adelaide showed that he still can do it, provided other batsmen lay the foundation for him. With his sheer volume of experience, one might be tempted to say the criticism of Dhoni is slightly ‘unjust’. Following Melbourne, criticism of Dhoni might need tremendous factual justification. last_img read more

Mount Kenya dish out walk-over to Gor

first_img0Shares0000Gor Mahia players at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on April 25, 2019 after Mount Kenya United failed to show upNAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 25 – In a new low for the Kenyan Premier League, bottom side Mount Kenya United have dished out a walkover to champions Gor Mahia after they failed to turn up for their league match at the Kenyatta Stadium on Thursday afternoon.Mount Kenya players refused to board the bus to Machakos from their pick up point at the City Stadium in Nairobi, citing unpaid dues amounting to five months. “All the management has been telling us was tomorrow, tomorrow… This tomorrow never reaches. The players have simply had enough and decided they will not go for the match today. It is very difficult to motivate them to even turn up for training,” a source at the club told Capital Sports.Gor players were already on the pitch by 2pm Thursday and waited in vain for their opponents of the day to arrive. They went into the pitch and had a small session with the match called off after 15 minutes of waiting.By 3pm, the players were still at the City Stadium staging a sit in as they waited for club officials to hear their pleas.Efforts to reach owner Francis Mureithi were futile as calls did not go through. However, chairman Bernard Mosomi said they are working round the clock to ensure the players get their dues.Gor Mahia defender Wellington Ochieng vies for the ball with Mount Kenya United’s Paul Odhiambo during a Kenyan Premier League match at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on January 16, 2019. PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya“It is unfortunate that it has reached a point where we have had to give a walk over. But I have talked to the players on the issue and promised to do something. We will meet again tomorrow and we discuss further and make plans for the next two matches. We will not give another walk over,” Mureithi stated. He added; “We know we have a problem financially but I will try reach out to some of our friends and see whether we can get some money to help out for now before we work on a long term solution.”Meanwhile, Mosomi says he is yet to touch base with the club owner over the state of the club.“We talked at length last week and I actually thought he would get something for the players this week. He had promised to ensure all players are paid but did not give time frames,”“I will look to it that I see him before meeting the players so that I can have a tangible statement moving forward,” the chairman further stated.Mount Kenya United’s Timothy Wanyonyi celebrates his goal during a past match Photo/RAYMOND MAKHAYAWith the walkover, according to Kenyan premier League rules, the broke Mount Kenya now stare at a Sh1mn fine for failing to honor a match while more sanctions might follow. Gor will be awarded the three points. The club’s future looked bleak after former owners and sponsors Nakumatt Holdings folded most of their establishments due to a severe cash crunch, but they had a slight wind of hope last season when politician cum businessman Francis Mureithi took over. What looked like a beautiful marriage that ended in a change of name quickly evaporated like the morning due with the club failing to pay its players’ salaries and allowances. They merely survived relegation last season but this time, with a return of eight losses in nine matches, their fate looks all but sealed.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Bacterial Flagellar Motor Has a Protein Clutch

first_imgThe bacterial flagellum, the whiplike outboard motor that has become an icon of intelligent design, has another artificial-looking part: a clutch.  Science reported this in “machine language” as follows:1The bacterial flagellum, powered by a motor that generates 1400 pN-nm of torque, can rotate at a frequency of greater than 100 Hz.  EpsE [the clutch protein] disabled this powerful biological motor when associated with a flagellar basal body and, in a manner similar to that of a clutch, disengaged the drive train from the power sourcee (fig.  S5B).  Clutch control of flagellar function has distinct advantages over transcriptional control of flagellar gene expression for regulating motility.  Some bacteria, such as E. coli and B. subtilis, have many flagella per cell.  The flagellum is an elaborate, durable, energetically expensive, molecular machine and simply turning off de novo flagellum synthesis does not necessarily arrest motility.  Once flagellar gene expression is inactivated, multiple rounds of cell division may be required to segregate preexisting flagella to extinction in daughter cells.  In contrast, the clutch requires the synthesis of only a single protein to inhibit motility.  Furthermore, if biofilm formation is prematurely aborted, flagella once disabled by the clutch might be reactivated, allowing cells to bypass fresh investment in flagellar synthesis.  Whereas flagellum expression and assembly are complex and slow, clutch control is simple, rapid, and potentially reversible. The clutch thus puts the flagellum in neutral and lets the motor idle without having to be shut down.  Among the co-authors of the paper was Howard Berg of Harvard, who has spent many years studying the molecular motor.  The paper did not attempt to explain how a clutch might evolve by natural selection.    For popular reports on this finding, with illustrations of how the clutch works, visit NSF News, Nano.org, Photonics.com, PhysOrg and Science Daily.  ARN discussed the paper from an intelligent design perspective.1.  Blair, Turner, Winkelman, Berg and Kearns, “A Molecular Clutch Disables Flagella in the Bacillus subtilis Biofilm,” Science, 20 June 2008: Vol. 320. no. 5883, pp. 1636 – 1638, DOI: 10.1126/science.1157877.This is another of many instances of one of the best-established laws in nature: evolutionary storytelling is inversely proportional to observational detail.  A good scientific law needs a popular name.  Write in with your suggestion.(Visited 43 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Before You Start Your Side Hustle

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now If you want to acquire greater business acumen faster, one way to do that is to start and manage your own business, in the popular vernacular what is called a “side hustle.” However, entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone, even though many glamorize it in this new economy. If you are going to start your side hustle, there are some things to make sure you have in place for you begin.Customer or client acquisition strategy: How are you going to find and attract customers or clients you need to run a successful business? If there is one primary reason new companies fail, it would be the most fundamental of all failures, it is that they do not acquire enough customers. A website by itself is not a customer acquisition strategy. The ability to manage a sales process: It is your responsibility to help any prospective client or customer through a process that helps them decide to buy from you and become a customer (or client). Without knowing how to manage the sales process, you make customer acquisition difficult at best, impossible at worst. The time and energy to execute: Here’s the thing about a side hustle. It’s a side hustle. That means you have a main hustle providing your present income. It may also be what’s funding your side hustle. For most people, “side hustle” means working nights and weekends. That means giving up hours in front of the television watching sports, bingeing on Netflix, and potentially spending time with the most important people in your life.External resources: If there is one thing that enables the side hustle more than anything else in this new economy, it is the proliferation of people who can provide services necessary. Whether it’s editing content, bookkeeping, marketing support, or human resources, you will need other people to do some of the work of running a business so you can focus on client acquisition, sales, and execution.A business model: This might have come first on this list, because of its critical nature. It’s last on this list because you have to have a model that allows you to be profitable. Which means the money you spend on acquiring clients, providing services, and paying for the external resources you need cannot exceed your revenue. If you want to know why businesses fail, you will likely find on this list. If you want to know why most startups never make it out of the starting gate, is because they’re missing one or more of the things in the paragraphs above.last_img read more
