WHITTIER – Shots were exchanged between pedestrians and a vehicle near Putnam and Greenleaf avenues at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, said Whittier police spokesman Jason Zuhlke.Witnesses reported the gunfire came from two pedestrians and people inside a car. But when officers arrived at the scene, no victims and no suspects were found, Zuhlke said. Robbery defendant appears in court LOS ANGELES – A man alleged to be the “Overweight Bandit” who carried out at least 10 bank robberies, including one in Pico Rivera, appeared in federal court Wednesday.Gregory Lynn Cross, 49, was arrested in northeastern Los Angeles about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Laura Eimiller of the FBI.Cross is being held without bail and is charged in a criminal complaint with four counts of bank robbery, although it’s possible he could be charged with additional counts, Eimiller said. He is due back in court Jan. 9 for arraignment, she said.The flurry of holdups, which began Nov. 17, included banks in Long Beach, Westwood, Pico Rivera and Manhattan Beach, according to the FBI. Police ID man in fatal shooting PICO RIVERA – A man who was shot and killed in what authorities said was gang-related violence was identified Wednesday as Ernesto Colon, 24, of Montebello.Colon was in a van with two other people as it drove up to a home in the 4100 block of Deland Avenue about 8:38 p.m. Saturday night. Someone in the van yelled at people standing outside before shots from the van were fired into the crowd. Someone in the crowd then fired into the vehicle, said Lt. Al Grotefend of the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.Deputies later found the van parked on San Gabriel River Parkway. Colon was found dead in the back of the vehicle.The two others who were with Colon in the van fled the scene and are being sought, said Grotefend.The person who shot at the van likely will not be charged, as the shots were fired in self-defense, he said.
