PORTLAND, Maine – Now serving sea monsters. That’s the message from members of the fishing industry, environmentalists and regulators who are trying to persuade U.S. consumers to eat more of a particularly weird-looking creature from the deep — monkfish.Monkfish have been commercially fished for years, but recent analyses by the federal government show the monster-like bottom dweller can withstand more fishing pressure. However, U.S. fishermen often fall short of their quota for the fish.A lack of reliable markets for the fish and convoluted fishing regulations make it difficult to catch the full quota, fishermen said. Nevertheless, the U.S. government is upping harvesters’ limits for monkfish for the next three years. Some New England fishermen switched to targeting monkfish in recent decades when traditional species such as cod began to decline, said Jan Margeson, a Chatham, Massachusetts, fisherman who made such a switch himself. He said the availability of monkfish represents an opportunity for the industry.“It is healthy. We can’t even catch the quota,” he said. “We had to find an alternative species once groundfish died years ago.”Monkfish, also known as goosefish, are predatory fish that camouflage themselves on the ocean bottom and can grow to be about 5 feet long. With a gaping maw and uneven, jagged teeth, its appearance is the stuff of nightmares. But proponents often say the taste and texture of its flesh is similar to lobster. And monkfish, which is often sold as a whole fish or as steaks of tail meat, frequently is more affordable than some other kinds of domestic seafood.Tails typically sell for about $7 per pound at New England fish markets where popular items such as lobsters and flounder sell for $10 per pound or more. The fish is brought to shore from Maine to North Carolina, with most coming to land in Massachusetts.Fishermen have caught more than 15 million pounds of the fish every year since 1987. They were allowed to catch 32.5 million pounds of monkfish each year from 2013 to 2015, but typically caught less than two thirds of that amount. The federal government increased that limit to about 33.8 million pounds for the 2017-18 fishing year, and that number will hold until 2020.The Environmental Defence Fund Seafood Selector and Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch both give the fishery positive reviews for sustainability. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also touts the fishery as a “smart seafood choice” that is “sustainably managed” according to federal guidelines, the agency says on its website.Right now is a good time for fishermen to start exploiting that reputation, said Ben Martens, executive director of the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association.“When we talk about diversification, monkfish is one of the things,” he said. “It’s a fishery that has opportunity for fishermen right now.”
Washington DC: Donald Trump’s campaign did not conspire with Russia during the 2016 election won by him, according to a summary of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report submitted to Congress on Sunday, in a major relief to the embattled US President on an issue that has cast a shadow on his presidency for nearly two years. In a four-page letter to top lawmakers on Sunday, Attorney General William Barr highlighted two sections of the long-awaited Mueller report — Russia’s efforts to affect the 2016 presidential election and whether President Trump obstructed justice. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USThe report was submitted on Friday to Barr, who reviewed the document before handing a summary to Congress. Trump, who repeatedly described the inquiry as a “witch hunt”, said on Sunday “it was a shame that the country had to go through this”, describing the inquiry as an “illegal takedown that failed”. Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey and other actions throughout the probe raised concerns about the president trying to end the investigation. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential pollsMueller, who spent nearly two years investigating Moscow’s determined effort to sabotage the last presidential election, found no conspiracy “despite multiple offers from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign,” Barr wrote in the letter to lawmakers. Mueller’s team drew no conclusions about whether Trump illegally obstructed justice, Barr said, so he made his own decision. The attorney general and his deputy, Rod J Rosenstein, determined that the special counsel’s investigators had insufficient evidence to establish that the president committed that offense. Barr cautioned that “while this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him” on the obstruction of justice issue. The investigation had cast a shadow over the Trump presidency for nearly two years with the Democratic leadership alleging that Russian interference helped him in the 2016 polls. Barr said that Mueller found no proof of such a conspiracy “despite multiple offers from Russia-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign”. “The special counsel’s investigation did not find that the Trump campaign or anyone associated with it conspired or coordinated with Russia in its efforts to influence the 2016 US presidential election,” the attorney general said. “For each of the relevant actions investigated, the report sets out evidence on both sides of the question and leaves unresolved what the special counsel views as ‘difficult issues’ of law and fact concerning whether the president’s actions and intent could be viewed as obstruction,” Barr said, adding Mueller “ultimately determined not to make a traditional prosecutorial judgment”. The release of the findings was a significant political victory for Trump who described it as a “complete and total exoneration”. Terming the allegation of collusion “the most ridiculous thing ever”, Trump said, “It’s a shame that our country had to go through this. To be honest it’s a shame that your president had to go through this.” “This was an illegal takedown that failed and hopefully somebody is going to be looking at their other side,” Trump said. “After a long look, after a long investigation, after so many people have been so badly hurt, after not looking at the other side where a lot of bad things happened… it was just announced there was no collusion with Russia,” he said. The Democrats were banking heavily on the results of Mueller’s investigation to defeat Trump in the 2020 elections. Many were also talking about impeaching the president if the report reveals collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. While the president and his allies saw vindication in Barr’s letter, Democrats questioned how Barr came to his conclusions and called for more information from Mueller’s report. Citing “concerning discrepancies”, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said he planned to call the attorney general to testify. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a joint statement that Barr’s letter “raises as many questions as it answers” and called for access to the full report. “For the president to say he is completely exonerated directly contradicts the words of Mueller and is not to be taken with any degree of credibility,” the statement said. Barr’s letter could be just the beginning of a lengthy constitutional battle between Congress and the Justice Department about whether Mueller’s full report will be made public. Democrats have also called for the attorney general to turn over all of the special counsel’s investigative files. Barr’s letter said that his “goal and intent” was to release as much of the Mueller report as possible, but warned that some of the report was based on grand jury material that “by law cannot be made public”. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the report has justified the president’s stand. Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said this is a great day for all Americans. “As we have said all along, there was no collusion and no obstruction. Now that this investigation is over, Democrats need to finally end their baseless investigations and political crusade against President Trump for the good of the country,” she said.
Raising the legal age for tobacco purchase from 18 to 21 years is likely to reduce smoking rates in young people and make the generation smoke-free, experts suggest. Most smokers start smoking during childhood and two-thirds of those who try smoking early will become regular smokers later, said the study published in The BMJ. Increasing the legal age to 21 would make it harder for children to obtain cigarettes and take the legal age beyond school age, said Nicholas Hopkinson, respiratory specialist from the Imperial College London. “Smoking is a contagious habit transmitted within peer groups, and the age increase will protect younger children from exposure to older pupils in school who smoke. It will also remove a potential source of supply within schools,” said Hopkinson. He stressed that besides helping existing smokers to quit, preventing young people from taking to smoking is imperative. Hopkinson also suggested that a “polluter pays” tax set to raise around $198 million per year from tobacco manufacturers will help to pay for a revitalised, evidence-based set of tobacco control policies.
VIDEO: Ohio State’s chances are better than most No. 1 comes with its own special circumstances: SMU was given the NCAA’s “death penalty” in 1987, canceling an entire season and severely damaging the school’s football program for years after. Other cases involve a new coach coming in with disastrous results, such as when Southern Miss fell from 12-2 to 0-12 in a single season after replacing Larry Fedora with Ellis Johnson. But Helfrich oversaw the high and the low — even if the high was built from the foundation laid by Chip Kelly during his four seasons in Eugene. Now the Ducks must find a new coach for only the fifth time in four decades, and rebuild the pieces of what was a great program until very recently. Share on Facebook It wasn’t surprising that the Oregon Ducks fired head football coach Mark Helfrich on Tuesday night, given Oregon’s 4-8 overall record, its 2-7 mark within the Pac-12 and the fact that the team lost eight of its final 10 games to close the season. Even by the standards of a school that rarely changes coaches, this was a fireable type of season. What was surprising, however, was how quickly things unraveled for the Ducks. Exactly 700 days — and 26 games — ago, Oregon was coming off a 59-20 shellacking of the then-undefeated, defending-champion Florida State Seminoles, and the Ducks were 7-point favorites in the national title game against Ohio State. Then the wheels fell off. What followed was the fourth-biggest decline — at least, according to the Elo rating system we like to use here at FiveThirtyEight — for any school over a 26-game span since the AP poll ushered in college football’s modern era in 1936:1For the purposes of the chart, the 26 games had to occur over no more than four seasons, to filter out teams that went on long hiatuses from Division I-A before returning many years later.

Credit: Colin Gay | Sports EditorThe Ohio State men’s soccer team (1-13-2, 0-6-1 Big Ten) will conclude the 2018 regular season when it travels to Wisconsin (8-5-2, 5-2 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes enter the season finale on an eight-game losing streak, in which the team has only managed to find the back of the net four times. On the other side of the pitch, Wisconsin enters the match coming off of back-to-back victories over Michigan and Northwestern, trying to secure the second seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. The Big Ten Tournament, which will kick off next Sunday, will see Ohio State enter as the ninth and lowest seed in the tournament. Indiana has earned the No. 1 seed, clinching its first Big Ten title since 2010 after defeating Ohio State in Columbus on Wednesday night. The Badgers offense is driven mainly by a pair of talented freshmen forwards from Illinois, Andrew Akindele with three goals and four assists and Noah Melick with four goals and one assist. Wisconsin’s second-leading goal scorer is redshirt senior forward Isaac Schlenker, who has three goals on the year.In order for Ohio State to find the win column, its forward group, led by the team’s leading scorer, redshirt freshman forward Devyn Etling, and the team’s leader in shots taken, senior forward Michael Prosuk must have an impact on Sunday afternoon.“We have to keep moving forward, one thing I give these guys credit for is they battle. They battle, and they battle and they battle. Against Wisconsin we’ve got to find some goals,” Maisonneuve said. “Again, if we defend like we did [against Indiana], we’ll be successful, we just have to find some goals.”In goal for Ohio State, redshirt junior Parker Siegfried is coming off a brilliant performance against No. 2 Indiana on Wednesday. Siegfried secured a season-high seven saves as his play between the pipes kept Ohio State alive all night. “The good thing about this, although we didn’t get the result we wanted, I think we’re going to kind of have a lot of confidence rolling into Wisconsin on Sunday,” Siegfried said. His backline, which had a strong outing against Indiana must have a repeat performance to give Siegfried some support. After the match against Indiana on Wednesday, Siegfried said that relishing their role as an underdog helped them against the Hoosiers and he said he thinks it will help them against Wisconsin in the finale. “I just think accepting that underdog mentality and kind of running with it is huge for us,” Siegfried said. “And I think we did that [Wednesday night] and we gave it to them a little bit so I don’t think Indiana wants to play us here again in the Big Ten quarterfinals after that. If Indiana doesn’t want to play you, then Wisconsin probably doesn’t want to play you.”Between the pipes for Wisconsin is junior goalkeeper Dean Cowdroy has a 0.93 goals against average alongside a .776 save percentage. Siegfried, has a 1.89 goals against average and a .644 save percentage for Ohio State through its 16 matches this season. Ohio State and Wisconsin are scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Joey Barton officially retired from playing football in the summer but has revealed he’d been planning to enter management for years.Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton discussed quitting football and the first steps he took towards management.“For me it has been a case of years of thinking, planning and anticipating what you were going to do coming to fruition,” he told Sky Sports.“And then all those best-laid plans going right out the window!“Everything you think you’ll face you do and then more, but it has been really enjoyable and every day is a real learning experience.“I don’t think anything can ever prepare you for it. It’s a role that varies from club to club and you can have all manner of things going on in any given day.“You really have to think about the ramifications of any decision or any interaction.”Joey Barton remembers those four years he played for Newcastle Manuel R. Medina – April 30, 2019 The English midfielder talked how he was signed by owner Mike Ashley and how he was frustrated after a while with the Magpies. It has been a good start to life as a manager for Barton. Fleetwood Town are 12th in the League One table. And the for the rookie manager, it’s been a learning curve as their form has tailed off in the last few weeks.“Getting the job was a case of timing and opportunity,” Barton said. “Fleetwood were changing managers and wanted to speak with me, and I couldn’t refuse that opportunity.“It has been a bit of a baptism of fire because I didn’t really know much about the level and there were a lot of grounds I hadn’t visited before this season.“But it’s the perfect breeding ground for me and a place where I know I can fulfill my potential.“It’s enough out of the spotlight to be able to make mistakes and learn from them, while also not getting too much praise when you do really get it right.”
