Nigerian Women Lead Rallies for Their Missing Girls Worldwide

first_img(TriceEdneyWire.com) – An unprecedented surge of gatherings and rallies across the U.S. and abroad sparked by the kidnapping of over 200 Nigerian boarding school girls have made plain the growing anger and frustration of Nigerian and other women over inaction by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration. After three weeks, little more than a call this week for an investigative committee has been accomplished.Since the rallies Saturday, photos of the impromptu events have appeared on Facebook and on blogs, widely exposing a story which received little press attention when the crime in the town of Chibot in the state of Borno, was first reported. From Union Square in New York City to Oakland, California, women filled public plazas with hand-written signs that read “Bring Back Our Girls” “Nigeria the World is Watching” “200 Too Many” among others. Most of the women wore headwraps or “geles” which have a spiritual significance for Yoruba women. In New York, Gugu Lethu said she was planning only to meet with a few women in Union Square to show support for the girls and mothers. However her flier for the event was passed from hand to hand and Facebook page to Twitter and close to 300 women turned up.Morgan State University also hosted a “Bring Back our Girls” rally on campus on May 7. At the event, participants marched from the University Student Center to the Academic Quad.Repercussions from the spontaneous gatherings were felt in Nigeria as the wife of President Jonathan tearfully took to the airwaves to accuse the grieving mothers of the missing girls of embarrassing her husband and to order the detention of two of the protesting mothers. She also pledged to march to the governor’s office of Borno state to demand the release of the girls although it is widely believed that the girls were spirited away to be sold as brides of men in neighboring Chad or Cameroon or to members of the terrorist group Boko Haram.Despite the tragedy, a major economic conference is expected to take place in Nigeria’s capital Abuja from May 7 to 9. President Johnson has given assurances for the safety of the foreign and African guests expected to attend. The BBC is reporting that schools and government offices are to be closed and arrests are being made.According to the website of the conference: ”The 24th World Economic Forum on Africa comes at a crucial time for the continent. Taking place under the theme, Forging Inclusive Growth, Creating Jobs.” Guests include Premier Li Keqiang of China and eleven African heads of state and government. Some 1,500 people have been killed since January 2014 due to the ongoing fighting between the insurgent Boko Haram group and the Nigerian military.A U.S. contingent in Nigeria will not be taking part in the girls’ rescue, it was clarified today. Their efforts are limited to security training and crowd control for the business event this week, reports said.Nigeria’s budget for security this year is more than $6 billion – double the allocation for education.Meanwhile, the noted author of Half of a Yellow Sun and most recently, Americanah, published a response to the tragedy called “The President I Want.” The full article can be read at: http://www.thescoopng.com/exclusive-chimamanda-adichie-president-want/last_img read more

Baltimore Police Hand Report on Gray Death to Prosecutor

first_imgBaltimore Police Department Commissioner Anthony Batts announces that the department’s investigation into the death of Freddie Gray was turned over to the State’s Attorney’s office a day early at a news conference, Thursday, April 30, 2015, in Baltimore. Pictured at right is Deputy Commissioner Kevin Davis. Batts did not give details of the report or take questions. He said the department dedicated more than 30 detectives to working on the case and report. ( (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police completed a criminal investigation into the death of Freddie Gray and delivered it to a prosecutor a day earlier than promised Thursday, but the commissioner said his department stands ready to help the state’s attorney gather more evidence. As if to drive home that point, a deputy commissioner revealed a piece of information that raises still more questions about what the officers involved have told investigators: The police van carrying Gray to the station made a previously undisclosed stop that was captured on a “privately owned camera.”State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby must review the evidence, consider charges and decide how to move forward in the death of Gray, who suffered severe spinal injuries after being stopped by police April 12 and died a week later.Police Commissioner Anthony Batts took no questions and provided no details about the report, which he said represents the work of more than 30 investigators.“I understand the frustration; I understand the sense of urgency,” Batts said. “That is why we have finished it a day ahead of time.”Batts said police would continue to work on the case at the direction of the state’s attorney. Mosby said her office’s independent investigation continues as well.“We are not relying solely on their findings but rather the facts that we have gathered and verified. We ask for the public to remain patient and peaceful and to trust the process of the justice system,” her statement said.Batts left it to Deputy Commissioner Kevin Davis to release yet another official timeline of what happened to Gray after his arrest nearly three weeks ago.In all, the previously undisclosed stop now makes four stops between the time officers arrested Gray and his arrival at a police station, where he was found unresponsive. He was hospitalized in critical condition and died a week later.Batts and Gray said nothing more about when or how investigators obtained the previously undisclosed video or learned about the additional stop. However, five of the six officers gave statements to investigators the day Gray was injured, and as recently as a week ago, the stop was not part of the official timeline, suggesting investigators learned of it later.Gray was arrested after he made eye contact with an officer and ran. Officers chased him down and handcuffed him behind his back. Bystander videos recorded police loading him, dragging his legs, into one of two metal compartments in the back of the van.Police earlier said the van stopped once so that officers could put Gray in “leg irons” because he had become “irate;” stopped again because the driver asked for an additional unit to check on Gray’s condition, and then again to put an additional prisoner in the van’s other compartment before arriving at the station. Now police are saying an additional stop was made before the driver asked officers to check on his condition. They said nothing about this stop other than its location — at what appears to be a desolate intersection with three vacant lots and a corner store. Last week, Batts had said the second prisoner told investigators the driver did not speed, make sudden stops or “drive erratically” during the trip, and that Gray was “was still moving around, that he was kicking and making noises” up until the van arrived at the police station.Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake sought to dispel any notion that the police report would bring a swift and public conclusion to the case. “Whatever time the state’s attorney’s office needs to make that determination, the family wants to get it right,” she said Wednesday after meeting with Gray’s family and legal team.“This family wants justice and they want justice that comes at the right time and not too soon,” said Hassan Murphy, one of the family’s lawyers.Meanwhile, protests over Gray’s death spread Wednesday night to other cities including Boston, New York and Washington, making it clear that tensions over the case are far from subsiding. The demonstrations were mostly peaceful, but police made many arrests, including at least 60 in New York.Gray’s death was only the latest high-profile case of a Black man dying as the result of a police encounter. Similar protests erupted over the killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; Eric Garner in New York last year, and Walter Scott in South Carolina. Scott was shot in the back by a White officer who has since been charged with murder.___Associated Press writers Ben Nuckols, Juliet Linderman, Matthew Barakat, Tom Foreman Jr., Jessica Gresko, Brian Witte and Jeff Horwitz contributed to this report.last_img read more

With Manufacturing Bootcamp Sagamore looks to Make Good

first_imgThe 16 men enrolled in Port Covington’s  Manufacturing Bootcamp represent the start of Sagamore Development’s promise to “make good.” Sagamore is seeking to deliver on a pledge to invest millions of dollars to support underserved citizens and communities in exchange for the unprecedented $660 million TIF passed by the Baltimore City Council for the Port Covington Project in fall 2016.Baltimore Mayor Catherine E. Pugh congratulates Bootcamp participants (Photo by Deborah Bailey)Baltimore City Mayor Catherine E. Pugh joined civic, corporate and community leaders to celebrate the Bootcamp with a tour and mini pep rally this week.  The Port Covington Manufacturing Bootcamp is a workforce development pre-apprenticeship program and the start of programs by the developer based on a $100 million agreement announced between the Baltimore government and community leaders in September 2016 requiring Sagamore Development to invest in job development and creation, moderate income housing and other community benefits.  “This is about the long game and I commend Sagamore Development and their partners for already delivering on promises made to help train, cultivate, develop and hire Baltimore¹s workforce,” Pugh told the partners gathered at the Foundery to support the program.  The Port Covington TIF was delayed for months while city council and community leaders worked with Sagamore Development’s leadership to craft the $100 million community benefits agreement insisted on by local citizen groups like BUILD and others in exchange for support of the $660 million TIF Sagamore development project.  The 16 participants represent the second class of Sagamore Development’s six-week career readiness program led by The Foundery, a workforce development hub at City Garage and the Center for Urban Families (CFUF) and co-sponsored by Whiting-Turner, and The Commercial Group. The Center for Urban Families serves as the connection point for men and women interested in the workforce readiness Bootcamp.   “What we do is on the front end.  We recognize that the Baltimoreans we serve may have various labor force impediments. “said Joseph T. Jones, founder, president and ECO of The Center for Urban Families. “They may have criminal backgrounds, little to no work experience, a checkered educational record. We support Bootcamp candidates with essential skills before determining eligibility for the program.”The second six-week Bootcamp began in early February and will be completed in March. Classes include woodworking, welding machinery, textiles and 3D printing.  Employers interact with participants throughout the course of the camp.  The eight men who completed the first program in January of this year were offered jobs immediately, according to Alicia Wilson, Sagamore Development’s vice president for community affairs. Wilson said that the Bootcamp model will continue to be refined and scaled-up until Sagamore Development meets the training and workforce development goals negotiated in the $100 million community agreement. “We’re starting now. We’re following through,” Wilson said.  “This is just the beginning.”last_img read more

And anybody who’s schizophrenic- if they’re stressed out- they will go into a sub personality,” Silver said. The 20-year-old is seen highly agitated in the video after getting in what began as a driving altercation with the bus driver that quickly escalated to violence.District police said the incident began on Thursday in the 1800 block of Bladensburg Road Northeast, near the U.S. National Arboretum, when the woman cut off the bus about 6:05 p.m.The bus driver attempted to speak to the woman and according to a police report, said, “You’re a crazy driver. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Abandons Quest for Third term

first_imgBy The Associated PressRahm Emanuel, whose tumultuous tenure as Chicago mayor included an infamous police shooting and a surge in violent crime, said in a surprise announcement Tuesday that he would abandon his plan to seek a third term next year but gave no reason for the sudden change of heart.Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will not seek a third term in office. (Stacey Wescott/Chicago Tribune via AP)Emanuel also led the effort to conduct the largest mass closing of neighborhood schools in American history and is credited with helping to stabilize the city’s finances through politically unpopular increases in taxes and fees. The 58-year-old former White House chief of staff known for his pugnacious political style said only that he and his wife “look forward to writing that next chapter in our journey together.”“This has been the job of a lifetime, but it is not a job for a lifetime,” the mayor said, reading prepared remarks at a news conference where he was joined at the podium by his wife. He held her hand throughout the announcement. Before becoming mayor in 2011, Emanuel was a Democratic congressman and chief of staff to President Barack Obama. In winning the city’s top office, he succeeded Richard M. Daley, who was mayor for more than 20 years, and won a second term in 2015.Emanuel had been running and raising money for months in preparation for the February election. The Chicago Tribune said he had already amassed more than $10 million to campaign for another four-year term. His announcement came the day before the start of jury selection for one of the biggest police-shooting trials in Chicago history, a case that seemed sure to renew questions about the city’s long effort to prevent the release of video showing White officer Jason Van Dyke shooting Black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014.Many people asked whether Emanuel’s office delayed releasing the video to lessen the political damage.“Imagine this trial is starting and what happened is going to get rehashed over and over and over again while you are in campaign mode,’ said Delmarie Cobb, a media and political consultant and a vocal critic of the mayor.David Axelrod, a friend of Emanuel’s who worked with him in President Barack Obama’s White House, disagreed. He said Emanuel told him of his decision not to run over the weekend.“I think he was aware of the timing of the trial, and he was also aware of what he did and didn’t do. And I think he was comfortable about that,” Axelrod said. “His concerns … were about his own level of energy and freshness.”A verdict in the officer’s favor or a hung jury could prompt another crisis in the city, angering many Chicagoans, inviting large protests and creating a volatile political atmosphere. No matter how the trial ends, Emanuel’s legacy as mayor will likely be tied to the case. The release of the video led to a Department of Justice investigation of Chicago police, culminating in a damning report last year that found widespread civil rights violations. After the report, he vowed to carry out sweeping police reforms, which has already included fitting all patrol officers with body cameras and non-lethal stun guns.Chicago’s violent crime drew national attention throughout Emanuel’s second term, with the number of shootings and homicides climbing to levels not seen in nearly two decades and exceeding the bloodshed of any other U.S. city. The number of slayings in each of the last two years was more than twice the total of Los Angeles and New York combined. The mayor clashed several times with President Donald Trump over the gun violence. Soon after becoming president, Trump tweeted that, “If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’ going on … I will send in the Feds!” Emanuel said he welcomed federal help but cautioned against the strictly “tough and rough” approach Trump seemed to advocate. There are now no front-runners in the mayoral race, and Emanuel’s departure will almost certainly encourage others to enter it. The twelve candidates declared to date include a former Chicago police superintendent, Garry McCarthy; a former Chicago public schools CEO, Paul Vallas; and Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown. They were all considered longshots.Emanuel has been a profile writer’s dream, from his time as a ballet dancer, to the loss of part of a finger while operating a meat-slicing machine at a deli where he once worked. Obama enjoyed linking the incident with Emanuel’s fondness for profanity by joking that the loss of his middle finger “rendered him mute for a while.” Emanuel once sent a pollster a dead fish, which helped earn him the nickname “Rahmbo.”His battle with the teachers union led to a strike in 2012 — the first in a quarter century. To shore up the city’s bleak financial situation, he was willing to do something no American mayor had ever done before: close 50 schools at once. The mayor several times referred to his family Tuesday, noting that his three kids are now in college. But he stopped short of saying family considerations drove his decision.“Politicians always say they’re leaving office to spend more time with their family,” he said. “My kids were smart enough to see that coming and scattered to the two coasts. So as of the other day, we are now empty nesters.”Emanuel grew up in the ritzy Chicago suburb of Wilmette, the son of an Israeli physician who moved to the United States. His start in politics came after college, when he worked for Sen. Paul Simon’s 1984 Senate campaign and Daley’s run for mayor in 1989.Then he went to work for a little-known Arkansas governor who wanted to be president. His fundraising skills helped keep Bill Clinton’s campaign afloat during some rocky times, particularly the scandal over whether he had slept with Gennifer Flowers.Clinton made him his political director in the new administration, but internal tensions led to his comeuppance a year later, when he was demoted to a policy adviser.Midway through Clinton’s second term, Emanuel left for Chicago to work in investment banking. The firm he joined was soon sold, and Emanuel made millions, giving him the financial security to get back into politics.last_img read more

Mayor Urges for Cannabis Legalization

This ruling allows the District to recognize the cards of residents from 27 states, which is an expansion from previously honoring patients from 19 states.  Safety was at the forefront of this ruling as well.“This emergency rulemaking is patient-centric,” said Mayor Bowser in a statement. “It ensures medical marijuana patients from other states can obtain their needed medicine. It will also promote public safety by allowing visitors to obtain their medicine at one of the District’s six – soon to be seven – authorized dispensaries rather than forcing them to go without or patronizing the illegal market.”The new states recognized include: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Nevada, New Mexico, New York and Vermont. Other states, including: Louisiana, Minnesota, Oklahoma and West Virginia, are under review.Residents with medical cards from Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington State are already recognized. By Micha Green, AFRO Washington, D.C. Editor, mgreen@afro.comThe pot possession to prison pipeline has historically affected communities of color and become another factor in inequities faced, but now District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Boswer is emphasizing the need for marijuana legalization and law reform with her campaign #SafeCannabisDC.“It’s time to legalize marijuana. For years, marijuana possession has been a pipeline to prison for people of color. We must replace that pipeline with jobs, equity, and pathways to prosperity,” the mayor wrote on Twitter while promoting a petition for the Safe Cannabis Sales Act.District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser is pushing for marijuana legalization. (Courtesy Photo)The Safe Cannabis Sales Act of 2019 builds on Initiative 71, which decriminalized marijuana usage in Washington, D.C., and institutes a legal sales and tax program in order to create a safer environment, while also offering clarity on cannabis usage and products.  In addition, the SAFE Cannabis Sales ACT was also introduced to promote and ensure justice and equity, so that the benefits of a legal sales and tax regime could go towards assisting and boosting, versus historically harming, vulnerable communities. The slogan for #SafeCannabisDC is “Safety, Equity, Clarity.”With #SafeCannabisDC the sales and purchase of marijuana would be tracked and taxed, and comes with rules and limitations building on current cannabis laws.  If passed, the Safe Cannabis Sales Act would offer more latitude in how residents can purchase marijuana- with restrictions of course.last_img read more

YouTube Shooting Suspect Was Angry About Demonetization Father Warned Cops

first_imgUPDATED: New details have emerged about the woman identified as opening fire at YouTube’s headquarters Tuesday in San Bruno, Calif., injuring three people. The shooting suspect was identified by local police as Nasim Aghdam, a 39-year-old San Diego resident who died at the scene Tuesday afternoon of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Three people at the YouTube campus were injured, one critically, by the alleged shooter.Aghdam had expressed grievances toward YouTube in videos and online posts, complaining that the Google-owned video platform was discriminating against her, censoring her content and had “demonetized” her videos.San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said at a press conference Wednesday that Aghdam was “upset with the policies and practices of YouTube. This appears to be the motive for the incident.” Her father, Ismail Aghdam, said in an interview with CBS2 News in Los Angeles that he had contacted San Diego police on Monday to warn them about her grievances toward YouTube. According to the report, he said law-enforcement authorities — responding to a missing person report — contacted him Tuesday at 2 a.m., telling him they had found his daughter in her car in Mountain View, about 30 miles south of San Bruno. According to Ismail Aghdam, police said they would keep an eye on her.“She was angry,” he told the Mercury News. Ismail Aghdam had told police that he feared his daughter was going to YouTube’s headquarters because she “hated” the company. The Mountain View Police Department in a statement Wednesday afternoon said that officers spoke with Aghdam’s father and brother. According to the department, Ismail Aghdam told them YouTube “had recently done something to her videos that had caused her to become upset” and that he suspected that was why his daughter was in the area. However, the police department said, “at no point did her father or brother mention anything about potential acts of violence or a possibility of Aghdam lashing out as a result of her issues with her videos.” MVPD added that “there was no indication from either Aghdam or her family that she may have been in possession of any weapons.”Aghdam posted videos on YouTube in English, Farsi and Turkish using various screen names, including “Nasime Sabz.” Her channel and other social-media accounts have been deleted since the shooting. On YouTube, Aghdam’s videos spanned a range of topics, including animal rights, vegan cooking, and music video parodies. But more recently, she took to railing against YouTube and its policies. “There is no equal growth opportunity on YOUTUBE or any other video sharing site, your channel will grow if they want to!!!!!,” she wrote in a post on her website, nasimesabz.com.In another post, she shared an image of her YouTube page showing that a video that had received 366,591 views generated just 10 cents of ad revenue. “My revenue for 300,000 is $0.10?????” she wrote. One of the evident sources of Aghdam’s rage was a new policy YouTube announced in January, setting stricter requirements for content creators to be eligible for ad-revenue sharing. The site implemented those in response to marketers’ concerns over the “brand safety” of ad-supported videos on the site. The San Bruno Police Department on Wednesday said Aghdam used a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun in the attack and that she visited a nearby shooting range earlier Tuesday. Police do not have information on where she obtained the gun but said she was in legal possession of the weapon. On Tuesday evening, the department released a photo of Aghdam:Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that four YouTube employees were injured in the April 3 shooting at YouTube’s headquarters. In fact, according to authorities, three people were wounded in the attack; police have not confirmed that all three were YouTube employees. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Netflix Plans to Raise 2 Billion More Through Bonds Bringing Debt Load

first_imgNetflix is going back to the debt markets to fuel more content spending, announcing plans to issue $2 billion in unsecured bonds. The proposed offering would be the seventh time in four years that Netflix is raising $1 billion or more through debt, and would bring its long-term debt to around $12.3 billion if the transaction is completed.Netflix, in a statement Tuesday, said the $2 billion aggregate notes will be issued in two series, indicating the principal amount will be in both U.S. dollars and euros. As of March 31, Netflix reported $10.305 billion in long-term debt on its balance sheet. In its first-quarter 2019 letter to shareholders, Netflix said it had “no change to our plan to use the high-yield market to finance our cash needs.” The company noted that it recently exercised its option to boost its revolving credit facility from $500 million to $750 million (which Netflix said remains untapped) at the same cost and extended the term from 2022 to 2024. ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Creator Jenji Kohan and Star Uzo Aduba Bid Farewell Popular on Variety Related What’s Coming to Netflix in September 2019 And Netflix’s cash burn has accelerated: Free cash flow for the first quarter of 2019 was -$460 million (compared with -$287 million in the year-earlier quarter). The company said it now expects its free cash flow deficit for the full-year 2019 to be “modestly higher” than it previously guided, to -$3.5 billion “due to higher cash taxes related to the change in our corporate structure and additional investments in real estate and other infrastructure.” It had previously told investors it was expecting negative free cash flow of $3.0 billion for 2019; Netflix says it still expects free cash flow to improve starting in 2020.The streaming giant — which needs cash to cover a content budget projected to be $15 billion in 2019 — last raised $2 billion in junk bonds in October 2018. In that offering, Netflix issued €1.1 billion ($1.26 billion) in notes at 4.625% due 2029 and $800 million of its 6.375% notes, also due 2029.To date, Netflix hasn’t paid down any significant amount of the long-term debt it has accrued. It reported $135.5 million in interest expense for the first quarter of 2019 — about 3% of revenue. That’s up 67% from $81.2 million a year prior (which represented 2.2% of quarterly revenue).Netflix also has billions in off-balance-sheet content-spending obligations, most of which is due within the next five years. As of March 31, 2019, the company had $18.9 billion of content-payment obligations, including $10.4 billion that aren’t on its balance sheets “as they did not yet meet the criteria for asset recognition.”Separately, Netflix disclosed in a regulatory filing the 2018 compensation of its top execs. CEO and chairman Reed Hastings’ total pay package increased 48%, to $36.1 million, and chief content officer Ted Sarandos saw his comp climb 32%, to $29.6 million. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Sony makes it clear hack your PS3 lose PSN access permanently

first_imgThe notice has been issued following the fight Sony has been having to stop the hacking GeoHot and others have done to open up the PlayStation 3 console. With lawsuits ongoing, Sony clearly wanted to make sure everyone knows what will happen if they get caught playing illegal games or circumventing the PS3’s firmware and protection mechanisms.Anyone choosing to do this is also taking a risk. Having PSN access disabled will cut off access to digital downloads initially, but could have further implications in the future depending on what Sony decides to do. If serial keys are introduced for games then a PSN connection may be required and therefore anyone without access can’t play the latest titles. The only option would be to purchase a new PS3 and create a new PSN account we believe.Although Sony is stating what most gamers probably already knew, it seems unusual they would continue to remind people that it is possible to hack the PS3 and play pirate games. Why not stay quiet on the matter and take action when it is identified on a case by case basis?Read more at PlayStation.Blog Sony has today issued a very clear warning to anyone thinking about hacking their PS3 or playing pirated games on the console. The following notice was issued via the PlayStation.Blog:Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently. To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.last_img read more

The Villains Are Still the Best Part of Gotham

first_imgIt’s hard to say where exactly Gotham is going with the rest of this season, but it better get there soon. At the beginning of this season, the Court of Owls was mysterious and powerful. Now, we’ve seen so much of them; they’re no longer mysterious. They apparently control everything in Gotham. Everyone ultimately works for them whether they know it or not. Now, they want to destroy Gotham and start it over, which they’ve done a couple of times before. That’s… not nearly as interesting as the show thinks it is. Gotham City has been threatened by so much weirder and more concrete dangers than some mysterious weapon. We just came off a gang of anarchic clowns led by a guy with a stapled-on face. Old rich people in masks don’t really cut it after that. The Court is interesting in the comics because Batman exists. They provide a new challenge for him, forcing the caped crusader to change up his tactics to deal with them. Jim Gordon isn’t Batman. He doesn’t have the resources or fighting skills of adult Bruce Wayne. And though he is A detective, he might not be the world’s greatest one. So instead of investigation and comic book action, we get an episode about Jim’s uncle trying to convince him to join the court. These scenes aren’t great, and there are way too many of them. We don’t even really learn anything new, other than the whole destroying Gotham thing. At this point, someone trying to level and remake the city is more of a default state than a shocking revelation.GOTHAM: Ben Mckenzie in GOTHAM (Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX)We do get to see the Talon with the katana again though, and that was a cool scene. The court can’t know Jim is investigating them, so he asks Barbara to find out what kind of weapon is coming into the docks. Before they can get any answers, katana dude cuts down all the henchmen while Barbara and Tabitha escape. He then decapitates the security guard they were interrogating. So ultimately, the scene accomplished nothing, but at least it was cool. It’s not every day you see someone get their head cut off on network TV at 8 p.m. As grimdark as Gotham can sometimes get, at least it generally has a sense of fun about it.So Gordon’s story was kind of a dud this week. He found out his uncle was the one who put a hit out on his dad, confronted him about it, and learned that it was because he was trying to take down the court and now he’s finishing his father’s work. The court decides that if Jim won’t join them, they’ll kill him, so his uncle kills himself. Now Gordon has to join and continue his father’s work of bringing down the Court. Maybe that will go somewhere interesting next week. For now, there was too much of Gordon going back and forth, only to ultimately end up joining the Court of Owls. The suicide at the end felt like a cheap way to make that happen, but whatever gets Gordon out of these endless uncle conversations is OK by me.GOTHAM: L-R: Guest star Raymond J. Barry and David Mazouz GOTHAM (Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX)Bruce’s story was a little better, but it’s obvious that they’re going to drag this League of Assassins stuff out as long as possible. It was a great touch that, upon waking up in a mountain cell somewhere, Bruce’s first instinct is to ask to speak to the person in charge. It’s such a rich kid move; it’s perfect. He meets a monk played by Raymond J. Barry, who I hope isn’t actually Ra’s Al Guhl. Barry’s great, no offense to him, but he doesn’t feel like a future villain. John Barrowman on Arrow is a more threatening Ra’s than this guy. He forces Bruce to relive his parents’ murder over and over again while telling him he needs to become a symbol of fear to the criminals in Gotham. That’s as far as we get, but we all know where this is going. This is the point that will eventually convince Bruce to dress up like a bat and fight crime. The only question is, is he here until that happens, or will he somehow make it back to Gotham first? Also, what about Alfred and the clone. We didn’t see any of that situation this episode. Alfred knows, right? He has to know.Maggie Geha and Robin Lord Taylor in GOTHAM. (Photo: Screenshot via FOX)The Penguin’s story is what saved this episode from mediocrity. He and Poison Ivy make a surprisingly great team, even better than he and Nygma did. Of course, it takes them a while to get there. Oswald is slow to trust this strange plant-obsessed woman who nursed him back to health. He is strangely trusting of the henchmen he calls to help him out. Of course, that all goes wrong and Penguin ends up tied to a chair with his life being auctioned off. He finally starts listening to Ivy when she uses her pheromone perfume to get one of the henchmen to kill the others. It was fun to see Ivy fully embrace her villain role. In her previous episodes, she didn’t do all that much. She robbed some rich guy, got in trouble and had to ask Bruce and Selina to help her out. That was it. Here, we got to see more of her plant abilities in action, and she started acting like the villain we know and love. She and Penguin bounce off each other in a fun way, and their story ended on an exciting note. The Penguin and Ivy are going to form a gang of former Indian Hill residents. The villains are coming back to take over Gotham.last_img read more

MovieBob Reviews MARVELS INHUMANS IMAX Preview

first_imgStay on target Is Inhumans good? It’s alright.Just alright? It’s the first two episodes of a standard-budgeted network TV genre show, sort-of spun-off from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., being released as an IMAX “special engagement” to promote the launch of the series-proper. This show is based on a subset of Marvel Comics characters generally considered to be too weird/obscure for prime time and widely believed to only be getting this kind of a big league push because Ike Perlmutter thought they could be reworked into an X-Men replacement. In that context? It’s alright, yeah.Okay. So… what’s it all about?Do you watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and/or regularly follow the fringe regions of the Marvel Comics line?Let’s assume I do not.Groovy. Okay: The Inhumans are this weird set of characters that originated back in the old Fantastic Four comics that were kind of a dry-run for various ideas Stan Lee and/or Jack Kirby would end up expanding upon in later projects like X-Men and especially Kirby’s later 2001, Fourth World and Eternals stuff. Their mythos is VERY convoluted, and they’ve never been particularly popular, but the basic idea is that they’re an alternate strain of the human race who descend from early-humans who were experimented on by The Kree in prehistoric times.Refresh my memory: The Kree are…?The mean blue aliens from Guardians of The Galaxy – Ronan the Accuser’s people. Anyway, Inhumans are born indistinguishable from “normal” humans, but exposure to a rare element called Terrigen (traditionally as part of a reaching-adulthood ceremony) their latent Kree-augmented genes become dominant, and they manifest super-powers and/or extreme physical transformations. Originally, the comics depicted them as a relatively small secret-civilization living in a hidden city where the main characters were the Inhuman Royal Family. But more recent stories introduced the idea that there are actually a lot of Inhumans all over the world who just don’t know their true nature because they haven’t encountered Terrigen yet; which was the narrative mechanism by which Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced Inhumans to the Marvel Cinematic Universe prior to this series. So this DOES connect to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., after all?Yes – though, given how AoS’s fourth season wrapped, no characters from that show actually show up here… at least, not yet. In any case, S.H.I.E.L.D’s second season introduced the idea that Inhumans have been living either in secret or in ignorance (of their true selves) since prehistoric times, and that season’s big climax involved Earth’s water supply becoming contaminated with Terrigen. This causes an “outbreak” of newly-transformed Inhumans to flare up all over the globe. Season 3 revealed that HYDRA was founded as a religious cult worshipping an ancient Inhuman “god” and that some of the old-school Inhumans had left Earth altogether once upon a time. THIS series is about those guys, or rather the Inhuman secret-city they apparently established in secret on the Moon, where the Royal Family familiar from the comics are both in charge and our main protagonists.Okay. So who are these people and what super-power stuff do they do?King Black Bolt (his power is a voice so loud that even a whisper is like a bomb going off), Queen Medusa (living hair, like in Disney’s Tangled), Princess Crystal (Medusa’s little sister, does elemental science-magic), Gorgon (really strong, has hooves), Karnak (kung-fu guy, sees the future), Triton (fish-man), and Lockjaw a gigantic but friendly bulldog with teleporting powers that they use to get around. That’s… wow. Okay, who are the bad guys and what’s the conflict?Black Bolt has been covertly sanctioning attempts to rescue newly-transformed (because of the stuff from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) Inhumans from Earth and bring them to Attilan (the Moon city.) This angers BB’s scheming, jealous younger brother Maximus; who thinks Attilan can’t support much more of a population and thinks their civilization should return to Earth and take over the planet. Also, he had a crush on Medusa before she hooked up with his brother and he’s still kind of sore about that, plus he has a massive inferiority complex about not having powers of his own.So Maximus isn’t Inhuman? It’s… complicated. Apparently, not all Inhumans get powers after going through “Terrigenesis” – and some that do get kind of crummy, minor powers. These less-lucky Inhumans make up an impoverished underclass in Attilan’s genetic caste-system, and part of Maximus’ desire (or what he claims is his desire) to take the Inhumans back to Earth is that abundant room and resources will render the caste-system redundant. Hence why the main thrust of these two episodes (once introductions are out of the way) is him initiating a military coup that puts him on the throne, Crystal and Lockjaw under house arrest and Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, Triton, and Karnak fleeing to Earth (specifically Hawaii.)Why am I not supposed to root for Maximus? Seems like he’s got a pretty good point! They cast the guy who played Ramsay Bolton on Game of Thrones, so… we’re kind of already meant to “guess” that there are darker motives waiting to be revealed. But, yeah – one of the reasons that this franchise is hard to work with is that there’s a weird quasi-eugenicist “blood purity” undercurrent to the backstory that’s kind of tough to mitigate without blowing up the whole mythos. Presumably, the show making it so central to the main conflict means they’ll be tackling these questions directly; but right now that’s a big maybe. So what CAN we tell about it, based on these two episodes? The whole enterprise is incredibly silly – turns out I jumped the gun in declaring Defenders the cheesiest thing Marvel has ever done. When you combine the inherent absurdity of the premise and characters with the way outside their budget scope and character concepts, what you end up with is, effectively, a late-90s Nickelodeon genre series but with middle-aged adults instead of teenagers. At least some of that is owed to the chintzy minimalist production design, which would probably look pretty cool if they bothered to photograph it with any kind of flair beyond basic network drama point-and-shoot setups. I’m sure they spent what is for ABC a lot of money on this, but they really could’ve stood to spend some more of it.Oof. What are the good parts? In a way, super-cheesy might have been the ONLY place you can go when your main characters’ primary mode of travel is “teleporting giant dog” and whose leader never speaks because his power is super-shouting. It’s probably a foregone conclusion that Lockjaw will end up being the “big thing” everyone likes (because dog), but – honestly, so far the standout actually seems to be Anson Mount as Black Bolt. Mount has a really rough, “hard-edged” tough guy look happening; so it’s kind of a riot to see him playing this guy whose alternately arrogant and “kingly” but also wounded, self-conscious and who can only communicate through sign language, gesture, and facial expressions. This has to be a weird role to figure out, and he’s doing something really interesting with it so far. Also, his relationship with Serinda Swan as Medusa feels pretty genuine and worth investing in – they’ve got real chemistry, and she holds her own despite having easily the MCU’s silliest looking super-power. The other characters, though, are all carrying invisible “I’ll be interesting later in the season” signs. So what’s the verdict? It’s a big mixed bag and almost certainly not the “royal intrigue epic” core fans of the comics were hoping for, but as network sci-fi shows go it has potential. Despite the budget kneecapping a lot of the broader weirdness, it’s still bizarre enough just on its face to stand out among other genre shows, and despite the connections, it feels decently different enough from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and other MCU material. It’s a very silly show executed in a cheesy, schlocky way; but there’s room for it to (maybe) grow into the right kind of cheesy.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Sony lists hundreds of PlayStation games releasing in 2015

first_imgEven as the PlayStation 4 left its competitors in the dust for most on 2014, many still felt its lineup of exclusive games wasn’t as strong as it could have been. Sure, it got a lot of indie love with games like Octodad and Transistor, but those showed up on PC as well. As far as big, PS4-only experiences last year, Infamous: Second Son was your best bet, and that came out in February. Sorry Driveclub. However, with sales in their favor, Sony wants to further its lead in 2015, and has announced the games it hopes will do just that.On the exclusive AAA front, gothic third-person shooter The Order: 1886 is out in just a week from now while Dark Soul’s spiritual successor Bloodborne will once again test players’ masochism next month. From there it’s a lot of updates of last-gen games including Borderlands and Devil May Cry along with multi-platform titles such as Mortal Kombat X, Batman: Arkham Knight, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, and the already released Dying Light.Once we reach the holidays, though, the prospects get a little more exciting. Although they don’t have solid confirmed release dates yet, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and a new Star Wars: Battlefront are all still scheduled for 2015.One of Sony’s smartest recent moves has been to continue courting the independent developers that prop up the industry between blockbuster releases. 2015 should be no different as games like Hyper Light Drifter, Shovel Knight, Nuclear Throne, and Apotheon land on PS4. And who can forget that PS4 is the only console players will get the ludicrously hyped, procedurally generated, sci-fi exploration adventure No Man’s Sky sometime this year. The PlayStation 4 isn’t Sony’s only video game hardware though, even if it definitely is the focus. 2015 won’t leave PS3 and PS Vita owners completely in the cold. Cross-generation games like MLB 15: The Show, Battlefield Hardline, and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 will come out on both home consoles while tons of smaller games like Broken Age, Broforce, Axion Verge, and Shantae: Half-Genie can be swapped between PS Vita and PS4.You can check out the full list on Yahoo!, but since it’s so early in the year plenty of this information can and will change. Expect more concrete info at E3 this summer. After all, what good is a game console, even one as slick as the PS4, without any games to get excited about?last_img read more

PS4 game with 65word title releasing in Japan next month

first_imgWhen coming up with a title for a new game, developers have to think of something memorable, or descriptive, or ideally both. Really it needs to be as short as possible, or easy to shorten by gamers. For example, Call of Duty is commonly referred to as CoD, and Metal Gear Solid is MGS. However, Japanese gamers are about to get a brand new PS4 (and PS3) game on store shelves with a game title that’s 65 words long. The game is a love simulator from D3 Publisher, which has a long history of publishing some rather excellent games (for example: Bangai-O, Earth Defense Force, Blue Dragon, Puzzle Quest, White Knight Chronicles II, and the Simple series). But this latest game has by far the longest title the publisher has released, and may in fact be the longest ever game title. The short version of the title is simply Summertime High School. The full title reads as follows:Summertime High School. A Young Man’s Notes – How a New Exchange Student Like Myself Ran Into His Childhood Friend On The School Tour, Then For Some Reason Became Super-Popular With The Girls For His Daily Scoops On The School Photography Club Even Though He Only Takes Panty Shots, And What He Thinks As He Goes On Dates During His Summer Of Island School Life.I doubt any gamers will be asking if a store has this game in stock by saying the entire title. And even if they did, I’m sure the employee would stop them long before they’ve finished with a “yes” or “no.” In fact, they may manage to process payment and have the game ready in a bag before those 65 words have finished being said. The gameplay of Summertime High School revolves around the main character sneaking up on girls and taking panty shots without being caught. As the trailer above shows, you can be caught by the girls, and chased by security guards. Will we see this game heading to Western shores? Before Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed was released in the US and across Europe I would have said no, but now I’m not so sure. One thing I can guarantee: if it does head West, the title will be 3 words long, or changed completely.last_img read more

Creepy catheaded man says Surface Pro 4 beats Macbook Air

first_imgListen up, laptop shoppers: this creepy cat-headed dude has something important to tell you. He really thinks you should buy a Surface Pro 4 instead of a Macbook Air.It’s really his jingle-singing human counterpart who’s making the pitch — sadly catman only makes a brief appearance in Microsoft’s latest Surface ad. His supporting arguments are the same ones we’ve heard before, like the fact that Surface Pro 4 has a detachable keyboard (optional, of course), a touchscreen, and stylus support. The intentionally-cheesey (we’re assuming) song also jabs the Macbook Air for being “slower, heavy, and a bit square.” Very sneaky, Microsoft… comparing the weight of the two devices without mentioning that the Surface Pro 4 is really only lighter when you don’t have a Type Cover attached. Once you do, the SP4 weighs pretty much the same as an MBA. There’s only a couple grams difference.Microsoft does spell out the technicalities in the footnotes of their Surface Pro 4 vs. Macbook Air comparison page, and they list a few more advantages: higher-resolution display and webcam, up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, facial recognition, and a virtual assistant. But let’s get back to this catman. You might think the ad is terrible. You might think that it’s hilarious. Whatever your take is, you can’t deny that the bizarre image from the video is burned into your subconscious. Sure, you probably mostly remember what the Mac and PC guys look like from Apple’s commercials, but you’ll never forget this thing no matter how hard you try.last_img read more

NES Classic On Sale Now at ThinkGeek

first_imgStay on target Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Don’t Expect Any More Nintendo Classic ConsolesKonami Announces Live-Action Contra Film and TV Series center_img UPDATE: You can alternatively still find them on Amazon if reports of them being sold out at ThinkGeek are true. One of 2016’s hottest items was the NES Classic Edition. Unfortunately, Nintendo’s miniature retro system wasn’t exactly easy to find due to low stock. Despite claiming it discontinued the console, Nintendo always seems to miraculously find more of these systems. Every six months or so the company will release a new batch for those who still want one. Those still looking for an NES Classic Edition will have another shot this week thanks to the folks over at ThinkGeek. The units will be available this Friday starting at 9 am EST. As you can imagine, there will be limited quantities of the system, with only one per customer. Thankfully, you can purchase the unit on its own. You will not have to purchase it as part of a bundle. The NES Classic comes bundled with 30 preloaded games. These include all-time classics like Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Pac-Man, Dr. Mario, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, and more. Despite being an emulator, the system does a great job of replicating the NES experience. It is a perfect console for those who want to relive their childhood or who may have never owned or played an NES back in the day. Best of all, it is compatible with modern televisions. You simply plug the console to your TV and start playing. No blowing into cartridges required!I managed to snag an NES Classic Edition through one of ThinkGeek’s bundles early last year. Personally speaking, I think the mini system is brilliant. While I wish it had a bigger game collection, it’s ideal for those who just want to play some old-school NES games without having to go through the trouble of bringing out the original system or playing an emulator on PC. I realize this is a limited quantity, but I sincerely hope everyone who wanted one can finally get their hands on the device. It really is a lovely little system.last_img read more

Death Stranding Is Your PlayStation 4 Holiday Exclusive

first_img Trade In Your Nintendo Switch For a Better Battery (With a Catch)Get Used to ‘Fortnite’s’ Powerful Mech Suits Stay on target Four years ago, after delivering the arguably unfinished masterpiece Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, legendary video game designer Hideo Kojima was unceremoniously fired from Konami. Thus began a dramatic arc of rebirth as Kojima started a new independent studio, partnered with Sony, released bizarre trailer after trailer, and settled on developer Guerilla’s Decima’s engine for his next project. That project, Death Stranding, is now almost here. Check out this long and appropriately inscrutable trailer for the game coming November 9 exclusively on PlayStation 4.Oh man, where to even begin with this. So from the very beginning we’ve known that Death Stranding would be exploring this idea of connection. It wants to be about “ropes” whereas other aggressive video games are about “sticks.” And we see some of this in practice as Norman Reedus’ Sam Bridges (clever) makes his lonely journey across the fractured country that used to be the United States. He tells the dying president that America is finished, and that’s such a mood. Sam’s various traversal tools like ladders and anchors further this idea of connection, as will whatever the online open world component will be.AdChoices广告But trying to parse the rest of this might be impossible. Your enemies are separatist terrorists, some of whom are called “Homo Demons.” And while you fight them with recognizable guns and punches, there’s also this black goo or mist that can, like, travel through time or to an alternate reality? You’re in a World War I trench full of ghost soldiers all of a sudden? And those babies in tubes (which you can get in the collector’s edition) have something to do with? It’s like if Metal Gear Solid 4 was released exactly as is but without any other Metal Gear games as context. There’s a character named “Die Hardman.”Fortunately, we have a pretty star-studded cast to hopefully explain all this nonsense to us. Alongside Norman Reedus Death Stranding features Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Nicolas Winding Refn, de-aged Lindsay Wagner, Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins, Emily O’Brien, and Guillermo del Toro. But famous or not, we’ll all be bound together in the ropes of confusion when Death Stranding launches this November. For more on Metal Gear check out the tabletop version and here’s why Oscar Isaac would be a great Snake.last_img read more
