The sentiment is true. The kiss is real,” Eyvazov said Wednesday. “More than this .”Eyvazov will be making his debut at the famed Milan theatre when he performs the title role in an opera that first was staged at La Scala more than 80 years ago.“The responsibility is great. The fear also,” he said. For Netrebko, who sings the role of Maddalena di Coigny, the Dec. 7 season premiere will be her third at La Scala. She opened the La Scala season as Donna Anna in “Don Giovanni” in 2011 and in the title role of “Giovanna D’Arco” in 2015.While Eyvazov has sung the Chernier role previously, this is his celebrated wife’s first outing as Maddalena. The couple often sings the final Chernier duet at concerts, but this will be their first time performing it together in the full opera.“The music is very climactic. I love to sing with him because our voices are blending together,” the Russian soprano said.“It is the smallest role I have sung,” Netrebko said. “It’s a wonderful role to rest. Because my repertoire is very hard. I am always singing these booming roles. This one, it is nice to be a little more quiet.”Still, she said Chernier’s rhythms are challenging. Besides the big aria and final duet, “between it is just little phrases, which is actually very difficult,” Netrebko said.Riccardo Chailly conducts “Andrea Chernier” as the opera by Umberto Giordano returns for the first time in three decades to the stage where it made its world premiere.
TORONTO – Canadian funnyman Howie Mandel is known as many things: a veteran stand up comic, a reality show judge, a germaphobe, a mental health advocate. And now, he’s part-owner and the face of the venerable Montreal comedy festival Just For Laughs/Juste pour rire.Upon announcing his role in a new ownership team led by the U.S. talent agency ICM Partners, Mandel adds a new chapter to a decades-long, multifaceted career that’s spanned comedy club stages, network television, various reality shows and charity work. Here are four things to know about Howie Mandel:HE BEGAN ON THE STAGELong before judging “America’s Got Talent,” anchoring “The Howie Mandel Show” and creating and voicing the animated hit “Bobby’s World,” Mandel shot to fame in the ’80s, thanks in large part to a stand-up gag that involved putting a latex glove over his head, stretching it over his nose and filling it with air.The trick lives on online, with one video clip featuring the boisterous jokester demonstrating his technique to actor Ted Danson: “Is this what you’re known for?” Danson asks in a video dated 1986.“Yeah. Isn’t that weird?” Mandel replies sheepishly.Nostalgic comedy fans will also find images of a baby-faced Mandel with a mop of dark curly hair gesticulating wildly with outstretched palms as he paces the stage. And the earliest incarnations of his popular alter ego Bobby, a squeaky-voiced boy with an overactive imagination.Despite moving on to TV roles that included a long-running stint as Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the 1980s medical drama “St. Elsewhere,” Mandel would continue to return to his standup roots, even hosing a multi-comic gala at Just for Laughs in 2016.HE’S A PROUD CANADIANMandel has said he “resented leaving” Canada in order to pursue a career in Hollywood, explaining that it was only because he found it so hard to build comparable success here. But he did his best to remain plugged into the Canuck scene, even gushing over homegrown TV hits “Kim’s Convenience,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “Orphan Black” before hosting the Canadian Screen Awards in 2017.“I believe that we are probably the most underrated country in as far as what we’re able to produce and what happens in our industry,” said the Emmy-nominated comedy star, who was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2009.“I’m amazed that it’s not more well-known worldwide. Maybe it’s just that what we have in creativity we lack in the entrepreneurial spirit of getting it out there.”And now that he has a stake in Just For Laughs, Mandel vows to continue championing Canadian talent.“Any reason I can get on a plane and come to Montreal I will and now I have many reasons and I expect to spend a lot more time there.”HE’S A SAVVY BUSINESSMANYuk Yuk’s founder Mark Breslin recalls the days of a wild comic who once stripped to his underwear on a flight to Los Angeles to unleash jokes on fellow passengers. This was back in 1979 when Breslin says he accompanied Mandel to his first show in L.A.“Howie’s come along way from the latex glove on the head,” says Breslin.Behind the scenes, Mandel has established himself as a proven show creator and executive producer, with a keen eye for preserving the bottom line, says Breslin.“I know he’s made a lot of money in California real estate, which he told me once upon a time, so I have to assume he knows something about money. I know he also negotiated a brilliant contract with NBC for ‘Deal or No Deal’ that made him an awful lot of money.”Breslin says Mandel is one of the few big comedians who cuts across a lot of demographics, and that should serve Just For Laughs well.“He knows everybody and he’s a very powerful player in Hollywood.”HE’S A MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATEMandel has lent his star power to several charities over the years. That includes raising awareness of atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart beat associated with an increased risk of stroke that he himself has.But he’s probably best known for speaking about his obsessive compulsive disorder, and an intense fear of germs that keeps him from shaking hands with people.“I have mental health issues as it is and as I sit and talk to you I am medicated so the highs and the lows aren’t really bothering me. I’m just floating in the middle,” Mandel admitted during a question-and-answer session at the Banff World Media Festival in 2011.Mandel also has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which he details in his autobiography “Here’s the Deal: Don’t Touch Me.”He has said he was “always nervous and neurotic and afraid.”“I wouldn’t tie my shoelaces at school. If mine came undone, I wouldn’t pick them up to retie them because the laces were on the floor,” Mandel said.“I would be anxious and angry and then I’d go home and take a shower until my Mom would say it was dinner time. I would be in the shower for hours and I’d use every towel.”———With files from Ross Marowits by Cassandra Szklarski, The Canadian Press Posted Mar 21, 2018 1:44 pm PDT Last Updated Mar 21, 2018 at 3:01 pm PDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Howie Mandel wanders into the crowd during the opening of the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards in Toronto on Sunday, March 12, 2017. The challenging platformer starring one of Nintendo’s oldest characters was originally released in February 2014 for the Wii U, earning critical acclaim but seeing its sales limited by the console’s modest install base. The Switch, however, has easily outsold the Wii U in just one fiscal year, and that has presented Nintendo with an opportunity to beef up the library for its new console/handheld hybrid with excellent, ready-made games. Nintendo released “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” on the Switch last year, and the former Wii U exclusive went on to sell 9.22 million units worldwide as of March.“Tropical Freeze,” the fifth instalment in the main “Donkey Kong Country” series, is no doubt deserving of such a second chance. The game features the lovable cravat-sporting ape in a meticulously designed and fun 2-D side-scrolling romp, difficult to challenge even expert gamers. Perhaps it’s a touch too unforgiving for casual players, but Nintendo has found a way to address that in the Switch version. The game begins when Donkey Kong’s birthday is rudely interrupted by a horde of Viking penguins, who sail their longships to Donkey Kong island, turn it into a wintry wasteland and exile our hero and his simian cohorts to a distant island. Not one to take a ruined party lightly, Donkey Kong begins on a quest to defeat his new Nordic enemies and restore his island to a sun-splashed paradise. Along the way he will get help from his fellow Kongs — Diddy, Dixie and Cranky. Each one increases Donkey Kong’s health bar and has an ability to help DK navigate the levels. Diddy Kong can hover for a short while, Dixie can increase the height of DK’s jump and Cranky can use his cane as a pogo stick to traverse otherwise harmful surfaces.DK’s companions are found in barrels scattered throughout the levels. While he can trample throughout the levels without help, the companions make life easier and are necessary to get at the well-placed collectibles necessary to unlock secret levels.Difficulty ramps up quickly as players traverse several worlds, each with their own enemies, traps and pitfalls. After lulling players into a false sense of security with a couple of easy introductory levels, the game throws some prickly platforming sequences early on. A fast-paced ride in a mine cart, with whirling propellers from a downed plane to avoid and dangerous chasms to jump over, will have average gamers leading Donkey Kong to his demise several times before getting the timing right. And that’s before facing off against the first boss. The game’s difficulty was praised by reviewers when released for the Wii U, but the biggest addition to the Switch version centres around an option to dial it down. A new game mode lets players enjoy the adventure as Funky Kong, whose usefulness belies his surfer slacker motif that comes complete with sunglasses and tank top.Funky Kong’s advantages go beyond his significantly larger health bar, and he can roll and breathe underwater indefinitely, double-jump and even hover momentarily and avoid damage from spiky floors thanks to his surfboard. Essentially he diminishes some of the game’s tougher challenges and makes it easier to get all the collectibles.Other than the Funky Kong addition, this is pretty much a direct port of the Wii U version, with enhanced graphics and a smooth frame rate thanks to the Switch’s more powerful hardware. But as many Switch owners would have missed this gem on the Wii U, Nintendo doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel here. With Wii U games like “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” and “Bayonetta 2” enjoying new life on the Switch, “Tropical Freeze” stands to finally get the sales to match its deserved critical praise.“Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze” is rated E for all audiences and retails for about $80.
